What is Regular Pilates?
General Pilates — sometimes called mat Pilates or studio Pilates — is a group exercise method based on the original system developed by Joseph Pilates in the early twentieth century. It focuses on core strength, postural alignment, breathing, and controlled movement.
Most general Pilates classes are delivered in groups, led by an instructor with a certificate-level qualification, and follow a standard sequence of exercises. The classes are excellent for general fitness, flexibility, and body awareness — and for many people, they are exactly what is needed.
The limitation of general Pilates is that it is, by design, a broadly applied fitness method. It is not tailored to individual movement dysfunctions, injury histories, or clinical presentations.
What is Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is a form of Pilates that is assessed, prescribed, and supervised by a qualified health professional — in Josh's case at Yodgee's Health and Fitness, an ESSA-accredited Exercise Scientist with a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science and a Bachelor of Health Science in Psychology.
The key difference is the clinical lens. Before any Clinical Pilates program begins at Yodgee's, Josh conducts an individual assessment — looking at movement patterns, posture, strength imbalances, injury history, and functional goals. The program that follows is designed specifically for that person, not drawn from a generic class sequence.
Clinical Pilates also makes full use of specialised studio apparatus — including the Reformer, Wunda Chair, and Ladder Barrel — which allow for a far greater range of movement prescription than mat-based work alone. Each piece of equipment can be adjusted to load or unload specific muscle groups, accommodate physical limitations, and progress exercises with precision.
What Equipment Does Clinical Pilates Use?
The Reformer
The Reformer is the most recognised piece of Pilates studio equipment. It consists of a sliding carriage, spring resistance system, and adjustable foot bar. At Yodgee's Health and Fitness in Carnegie, the Reformer is used to build strength, improve flexibility, and develop control across a wide range of movements — from foundational to advanced. Spring resistance can be adjusted to make exercises more or less challenging, making it suitable for clients at any stage of their movement journey.
The Wunda Chair
The Wunda Chair is a compact, spring-loaded platform used to develop lower limb strength, balance, and functional stability. It is particularly effective for single-leg work, hip strengthening, and rehabilitation of the ankle and knee. For NDIS participants and clients returning from injury, the Wunda Chair allows highly targeted progression at a pace that is safe and appropriate.
The Ladder Barrel
The Ladder Barrel is used primarily for spinal mobility, hip flexibility, and back extension work. It supports the spine in positions that are difficult or uncomfortable to achieve on a mat, making it valuable for clients with postural concerns, lower back stiffness, or reduced thoracic mobility.
How Does the Assessment Process Work at Yodgee's?
Before beginning Clinical Pilates at Yodgee's Health and Fitness, every client works through an initial assessment with Josh. This includes a review of health and injury history, observation of functional movement patterns, and identification of specific goals — whether that is recovering from an injury, improving athletic performance, managing a chronic condition, or simply moving better in daily life.
From that assessment, Josh designs a program tailored to the individual. Sessions are conducted one-on-one or in small groups, with ongoing monitoring and progression built in. As the client's movement improves, the program evolves to match.
This is not a fixed sequence. It is an ongoing clinical relationship.
Who Benefits Most from Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is particularly well suited to people who:
Are recovering from a musculoskeletal injury or surgery and want to rebuild strength and movement safely
Have chronic pain, postural problems, or movement limitations that general exercise has not addressed
Are NDIS participants working toward mobility, independence, and capacity-building goals
Are high-performance athletes looking to correct movement asymmetries and reduce injury risk through biomechanical analysis
Are managing a health condition that requires individual prescription rather than a group exercise approach
Are new to exercise and want a personalised starting point rather than a group class environment
Why Choose Yodgee's Health and Fitness for Clinical Pilates in Carnegie?
Yodgee's Health and Fitness has been operating in Carnegie since 2009. That is seventeen years of working with clients across Melbourne — from Carnegie and Bentleigh to Oakleigh, Caulfield, Murrumbeena, and Glen Huntly — across every stage of life and every level of movement ability.
Josh's background is not that of a general fitness instructor who completed a Pilates certificate. He holds a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science and a Bachelor of Health Science in Psychology, alongside a Diploma of Remedial Massage and ESSA accreditation as an Exercise Scientist. This combination — science, clinical movement, and a deep understanding of how the body and mind interact — shapes every session at Yodgee's.
The studio is equipped for the full scope of Clinical Pilates practice. The Reformer, Wunda Chair, and Ladder Barrel allow Josh to prescribe across a wide range of client needs — from post-surgical rehabilitation to elite athletic conditioning — with a level of precision that a mat-only setting cannot offer.
Yodgee's also provides NDIS-funded Clinical Pilates for self-managed and plan-managed participants — a genuine area of expertise and a significant differentiator in the Carnegie and broader Melbourne market.
